Puppy Essentials
When starting out with your puppy it can be so helpful to have the right tools!
All of these items we have personally purchased and use on a regular basis.
Grooming
Tropiclean Puppy Shampoo | Tropiclean Conditioner | Slicker brush | Baby Nail Clippers | Breath Freshener | Dry Shampoo | Dog Dryer | Nail Clippers
Tropiclean Puppy Shampoo – We use this on all of our puppies! I love the great smell as well as the natural ingredients.
Tropiclean Conditioner – This conditioner makes their coats so smooth and shiny. The separate shampoo and conditioner works much better for us than the combined 2-in-1 shampoo & conditioner, it just isn’t as effective!
Slicker brush – Every pet owner needs a brush, and we’ve gone through many! We like this one as it is effective and durable, while still a good price. If you are looking for a higher end brush this one is a top tier brush, the number of bristles really does make a difference!
Baby Nail Clippers – I didn’t know I would love these so much! These are my favorite for trimming puppy nails. Obviously as they get bigger you’ll need the bigger trimmers, but these are a great way to get started and comfortable clipping nails.
Nail Clippers – We use these on our adult dogs and growing puppies once the baby nail clippers gets to be too big. It’s essential to have a great pair of clippers if you plan to clip your own dogs nails (you can do it!). You can also use a dremel. This dremel is the one we own and really like! It is great to get a smooth finish on your dogs nails if you have wood floors and want to keep their nails nice and short. The biggest tip with a dremel is to introduce it at a very young age and go slowly. You might not even touch their nails the first 3-5 times you introduce it, but are simply getting them used to seeing and hearing it.
Blow Dryer – We love our Burano dryer, and this one is the same as ours, just without the stand. This dryer is the exact one we own, but having it with the stand isn’t usually necessary in a home. Again, introduce this dryer nice and slowly, with lots of treats, and you will have a much easier time grooming your dog! If he is out in the rain or coming in from the pool it cuts down the drying time immensely. I highly recommend!
Breath Spray – If you come to visit the puppies and their breath smells good it’s because of this spray. We love this spray for when we have visitors over, or when we just want to freshen their breath.
FOOD/Treats
NuVet Supplements – We feed this to all of our dogs and puppies. 1 wafer at breakfast is a quick and easy way to support their immune system. We do get a small commission if you purchase through our code, but we would honestly feed and recommend this product without a referral benefit! You do need to purchase this through a pet professional and use a code, you can’t get it on amazon. Our code is 425087
Puppy Food – Our puppies do really well on Purina Pro Plan, and we typically feed the regular puppy chicken and rice, but Luke recently accidentally purchased the shredded blend and we really like it!
Bully Sticks – These are a great distraction for a teething puppy. I get the 12” ones and put them in the Kong bone so they can’t choke on a small piece.
Yak Cheese– These are another great option for a chew that lasts a little while. Always watch your dog or puppy while they have this so they don’t get it down to a small piece they could choke on.
Training Treats – We use these and Blue Buffalo training treats for our puppies. They are semi-soft, which helps them to easily chew them as we train. We want a puppy to be able to quickly chew and swallow the treat and continue training and these do the job. We also like using cheese, cut up hot dogs, and regular puppy food for training as well!
Flirt Pole – If you have young kids GET THIS! It’s a great way for the kids to play with the puppy without the puppy being in their faces. Our boys use this all the time with the puppies and it creates just the right amount of space that they can still interact, but give a little space for the puppy to run and jump.
Greenies – I don’t always do a great job at cleaning our dogs’ teeth, so this is an easy way to help clean their teeth and freshen their breath. We also regularly give our dogs raw beef bones and that also helps clean their teeth.
Well this post got much longer than I thought! I started making a list of a few things we use everyday and because it has grown I will have to make another post about our favorite toys so stay tuned for that! I’d love to hear in the comments, what are some of your favorite puppy essentials??
