Tips For Introducing Your New Puppy To Your Other Dog

First impressions matter! Set you new puppy and dog up for a wonderful lifelong bond.

1. Meeting space – Ideally have them meet in a neutral space such as out on a walk or at a friend’s house. It can be very intimidating for your dog to see a new puppy being brought into ‘his’ house.

2. Introduction – Keep both dogs on a leash when they first meet. Accidents can happen quickly,so you want to be present and able to control them if anything happens.

3. PRAISE! – If they are both sniffing each other and not growling or showing any anger be sure to praise them for it! Encourage what you want to see more of, discourage what you want to see less of.

4. Separation – The older dog most likely isn’t used to the energy of a puppy, so provide a safe space where he can be that the puppy cannot get to. Likewise, provide a space for your new puppy that your other dog cannot reach. It is also helpful to feed them in separate areas so there is no risk of fighting over food (probably what dogs are most territorial over). We also advise not letting your dogs alone without anyone watching for the first two weeks.

5. MORE PRAISE! Even though your puppy is going to get lots of attention the first few weeks, it is very important that your older dog gets just as much attention so that he doesn’t feel left out.

Bringing a new puppy into the family can be challenging, but by implementing these tips you are setting your dog and new puppy up for success. Remember, all relationships take time to develop, and dogs are no different, but the effort that goes into a great meeting and adjusting time pays off for years to come!
